WHITE HOUSE: Last night, US President Obama hosted a group of young Asean leaders to discuss the impact arresting Malaysia’s opposition leader had on our democratic freedoms.
“Malaysia has a rich history of always having the same government,” Obama said, “it is important that if you’re going to lock up a threat to that government like your opposition leader, you do so in a way that preserves the democratic rights you are accustomed to!”
“What the US doesn’t want, is a situation where the legitimacy of getting Anwar out of politics is questioned. That can make it a little awkward for a President seen playing golf or signing trade agreements with your Prime Minister!”
