Lebanese Trader Sends PM Bata Sandals For Viewing

PUTRAJAYA: Staff overseeing the residence of Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali were caught off guard yesterday when a selection of Bata sandals arrived unannounced.

“The Prime Minister has made it quite clear that gifts aren’t necessary on his birthday or on any other day, so we followed standard protocol and requested the items be returned to sender.

However the selection of Bata men’s and women’s sandals was later discovered not to be gifts from Bata, but a selection of items for viewing ‘Lebanese jeweler consignment style’ courtesy of an enterprising Beiruit-KL trading company,

“We tried our best,” explained sales executive Abdullah bin Bakar collecting the goods, “but despite our best efforts we couldn’t tempt the PM into trying new black PVC thongs, light dark brown slippers and ace toe ring Hawaii-style walkers.  We were informed he’s sticking with his classic RM11.31 men’s Bata brown sandals for now.”
